[ It had taken a few days, as Adrien had carefully gone over all current procedures. He'd taken notes, then taken time to consider his recommendations before writing them up and submitting them to the captain. ]
TO: Captain Curre FROM: Dr. Adrien Arbuckal (Crew member) SUBJECT: Proposed procedure enhancements for MedBay and MedBay staff
Captain,
I have gone through a thorough review of all current MedBay procedures and identified the following areas for potential enhancement.
MID Cuff/Cryo/Ingress synchronization - It is my recommendation that the MID Cuff, life support feature be synched with the Ingress (or inter-ship/ship to planet equivalent) in order to trigger immediate transport of injured personnel back to ship board cryo unit when vitals drop bellow 8% viability.
Mobile & Portable Medical Units - If we are going to be deploying planet side on a regular basis I suggest the development of Mobile Medical Facilities. These can range from having regular personal packs for doctors and medical staff to carry on their person, to the organization of a tent or other portal medical base that can be deployed and set up for longer term usage.
Cross training - Training among the staff, particularly if we take on healers who use magic based abilities, was something I found very useful in my previous position. Not only did it allow us to develop a broader base of skills it also allowed us to have a thorough understanding of one another's abilities, so that in times of crisis our resources were maximized to the fullest.
Basic First Aid Training - Pretty much what it says on the tin. Allow the medical staff to offer basic first aid, emergency wound care training to the crew. The more people who know the basics when deployed out in the field, the better if there are injuries and medical staff can't get to the injured immediately.
These are three areas I specifically identified on an initial review. There may be more as we continue to work together and gaps present themselves.
If you have any questions or wish to discuss anything further, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Everything you have submitted has been noted accordingly. Any potential synchronization with the Ingress is not possible at this time, though there will be an attempt to coordinate that function if constraints allows. The remainder of your suggestions are a simple accommodation, and it will be relayed to all current members within the next week.
I will be available to speak with you about these in person once you have returned aboard the Moira.
[ As before, the message ends simply with Cúrre. ]
I recently received five units of medi-gel from home. It's an anaesthetic and clotting agent which can stop bleeding and seal injuries against other contaminants, and under a certain frequency of ultrasound, it can heal injuries in a minute or two. I don't know its ingredients or chemical makeup, but could it be reverse engineered and produced for use in the medbay?

text, shortly after Manasseh is brought to sickbay
Captain Cúrre, since it appears that our... intruder situation might call for rapid responses and you're in the best position to directly assess the harm it's causing, I'd like to copy my reports to you until Navigator Manasseh is back on duty. If that's acceptable.
We are assessing how to best track it down and neutralize it. May I visit the infirmary and deliver that report in person?
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Much of the equipment in the Medbay, specifically the labs, will assist in the breakdown of chemical composition and potentially assist with the process. Feel free to use the facilities as you need.
Be that as it may, have you discussed this with Thán? He is acting captain as of this cycle. However, if you cannot contact him, I will hear the report.
What are the basic rules for how you bring people back, because I almost had Miles Vorkosigan drop a load right in the Medbay when I told him his artificial bones were gone, and I'd rather not have to deal with that shtako again.
Especially since the likelihood of more people dying seems pretty high.
Due to its delicate nature, there are no "basic" rules. It is unpredictable, and the condition of one's body will not always reflect that of their current (or former) self. If Crewman Vorkosigan has specific queries, he is more than welcome to direct them to me—not through you.
If you are asking for procedures, I can provide documentation for such protocols. Unfortunately, all we can do is tend to them after.
If you don't mind, I'd like it if we started doing comparison scans immediately, from their records when they arrive and after they're brought back. So we got at least a record of physical differences that we can tell them about immediately.
It should be part of routine care already. Due to the unexpected circumstances of those deaths, some things might have been overlooked. That, however, is not an excuse.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention, Crewman Yewll. [ She does not, in fact, like that things like this have slipped past her. ]
No problem. And sorry for the tone. [A very rare apology.] I get pretty annoyed when people ignore warnings both warnings of danger and improbable facts.
I prefer honesty of those who work in Medbay. [ Which means she understands. ] If you see other discrepancies, please don't hesitate to bring them to my attention as well.
I recently discovered that since my cryorevival, something's gone wrong with my body. It's my legs. A few years ago I had the original bones in my legs replaced with plastic synthetics, but according to Doc Yewll, that is somehow no longer the case. Somehow, instead of synthetics, I've got the original bones -- and they are the original ones, traces of old breaks and all. I want to know how.
Are you certain you wish to know the details of your resurgence? There are simply some questions that should not be asked and best left to the imagination. [ She isn't saying no though. ]
[ It's rare for Cúrre to use this particular MID function. However, she feels that this news is best received in person—or as close to it as possible. Her face is passive, not as caring as it had been when Miles had awoken from cryo but not entirely hard either. ]
Circumstances vary for everyone depending on the nature of the person being resurged and their personal endeavors. If one has not suffered, it is likely their body will remain intact through the process and nothing will have lapsed aside from time. But... it is not always easy. It usually never is. [ She pauses. ] Your limbs are that of an old body in a new time, Crewman Vorkosigan. What was left of your other was lost, not repaired or replaced.
The one you are in belongs to you, but it was taken before those years. As I have explained to another crewman, resurgence has no rules. You are lucky to still be of your own mind.
[ if one has not suffered... well, if there's one thing you could say about miles' recent death, it's that he definitely suffered. he takes all this in with a shallow breath as he stares at his MID screen, suddenly gaining a fresh new insight into what thán had meant when he said he pulled them through the ingress. this is starting to sound uncomfortably similar to what he and elizabeth had talked about a few weeks ago. he doesn't know if he likes it. an old body in a new time... hell. unlike most people, the last thing miles wants to do is go back in time with his body. it doesn't really get much better.
he appreciates cúrre switching to video for this, but he can't really bring himself to. easier just to type at her, when his mind is racing this hard. ]
These are recent discoveries. I'm telling you now. They weren't things I knew were gone until they were pointed out to me, but... They weren't insignificant. I forgot some people entirely.
When you are free of your duties, report to the Medbay, and we will discuss this at length. Some do not always want to have their memories returned to them, but if that is what you prefer, it can be done.
